Like many women today, I work to help my family make ends meet. Contrary to popular belief, there is not a lot of money to be made in home childcare.
Your fees must also provide my income, including taxes and social security. Like other self-employed workers, family child care providers do not get the benefits which many employees take for granted, such as: health/dental insurance, life insurance, unemployment insurance, retirement, flexible time off, etc.
Family childcare is also very restrictive and there is absolutely no room for growth because the State of California dictates the size of my business.
I cannot take time off for appointments or obligations without careful planning and covering of my childcare responsibilities. I hope this gives you a better picture of the true cost of childcare.

- Craft Supplies: crayons, tape, glue, goggle eyes, scissors, markers, paper etc.
- Toys: games, puzzles, and computer, Pre-school games, toys, strollers.
- Liability insurance, transportation, gas, car insurance, car repair etc…
- Provider training, CPR Re-certification, childcare safety etc.
- Birthday/Christmas gifts, supplies for parties and celebrations for each child, an extra dishwasher load daily for sanitation of toys put in mouths. Utilities: electricity, heat, water, gas, telephone and, Internet. Furniture/Home repairs, cleaning due to wear and tear from running a home childcare, and the list goes on…
